Bat Conservation International - is a non-profit organization based in Austin, Texas. They own Bracken Cave in Texas which is the summer home to between 20 to 30 million Mexican free-tailed bats. Their website has many great Bat House Resources including two Free Bat House Plans. They also have articles on installing and making successful Bat Houses. Though this guy’s website is more concerned with tea, he did a great job showing us a DIY bat house.
Dingbats in popular culture
It’s important to remember that the inside surfaces of the wood should never be treated with chemicals. I stumbled upon this project when I was researching 2017 gardening trends for the Northwest Flower & Garden Show. I was surprised to see that bat houses was one such trend! With the growing shift towards organic gardening and avoiding pesticides, people are looking for all-natural ways to eliminate bugs in their gardens. Bats get a pretty bad rap, but they’re actually a kind of natural pesticide (the way ladybugs are for aphids). Bats fly around at night and eat all the bugs (the ones that attack plants, plus the annoying ones like mosquitos).

Bat House Plans
And in return, you don’t have to use as many pesticides. Bat houses should be mounted on poles or buildings, which provide the best protection from predators. Wood or stone buildings with good solar exposure are excellent choices, and locations under the eaves often have been successful. All bat houses should be mounted at least 12 feet above ground; 15 to 20 feet is better. I set the circular saw to only 1/16 of an inch, reclamped the plywood and started cutting grooves into the backboard. They were not always perfectly straight lines, but that's not important because trees do not have perfectly straight grooves either.
Step 8: Painting or Staining
The inside of the bat box should be warm and dark and have an unfinished interior so they have a surface that they can hang onto when they're inside. If you already have bats, giving them a home of their own will discourage them from nesting in other areas of your house. I didn't know what color and initially I thought white to match my house trim. But then I checked their website and they have a map where you look up what color to paint your bat house. Many are located on cheaper lots found near "locally undesirable land uses" such as sewage plants, power stations, jails or major freeways.
This works out good, as you'll see later as the split will act as 'ventilation' for the house. To be a bit different, I decided make a true 'Batman' box, using a design based on the 1940's version of the logo. This was more than an aesthetic choice as it was really the only one large enough to act as the front cover of the box. You can choose a different version, but it's good to be certain that it'll fit the size of box you're creating. One bat can eat upwards of 1000 bugs, including mosquitoes, per hour.
Just as there are several ways to attract bats to your yard, there is more than one way to build a bat house. Building panels is one of the core skills required for many woodworking projects, and a good set of parallel clamps will help immensely. Fully open your clamps and set them down side by side, about 2 inches closer together than the full width of your panels. Lay the boards across them, jointed faces down, and press the boards together by hand to make sure all the seams are tight. If they aren’t, clean them up on your jointer or table saw.
Finally, pre-drill holes for your top and again, applying silicone, screw it into place. Now, any expectant bat mother will have enough space to nurture their young.
The Plans
Always cuboid, the stucco boxes usually contain six to twelve apartments per building. Most dingbats are covered in stucco, sometimes along with other materials like vertical wooden clapboard, concrete blocks or river rock. The stilts that support the cantilevered portion of the building are generally made of metal or stucco-covered wood. The further north you live, the darker you’re going to want to paint your bat house in order to keep the heat in. These plans call for plywood and black water-based spray paint. Oddly enough, hanging bat houses on trees doesn’t work well, even though bats often roost directly in trees.

Step 1: Measure and cut the plywood
All kits have been designed to meet Bat Conservation International (BCI) certification requirements, once built and painted. For Bat Week, Habitat for Bats is offering the following discounts. Don’t mistake the size of this bat house for the necessary skill level. Though it’s able to house several bats, it’s simple enough to make.
Just remember, you don't want anything to be able to disturb the bats so mount it somewhere it won't be interfered with. Don't staple the bottom half of the mesh down if you intend on painting or staining your box. You don't want to paint the inside so this will allow you to finish building it, rolling up the mesh, out of the way, so that you can paint the runway. After some checking and re-checking, I realized that the logo would be a bit short for my needs, and considered making it somewhat bigger.
In return, insectivorous bats will eat many of your unwanted yard and garden pests. Hang your bat house under the eaves of your house or from a tall, flat pole made from pressure-treated lumber. Using a brush and roller, paint the back piece black, from the top edge to the ends of the 1x2s. This bat house looks very similar to a modern birdhouse. It lays flat against a building or tree and shouldn’t take up much space at all. And not everyone has large trees that they can place their bat box in.
If it needs to be trimmed, simply lay out your part oversized and trim all four edges. With the hard work over, comes staining and waterproofing. That’s the fun part of the project – that and seeing the first visitors arriving and leaving to capture their food. Starting from the top (still leaving a 1″ space to attach the top board), secure the two larger boards next to each other.
The roof supports are only placed in the front and back chambers. On the plus side, I learned that bats offer a great many positive benefits to a homeowner with a little property. For starters, most North American bat species eat insects—lots of insects. Some will consume up to their body weight in bugs every night!
If you are building a bat house with more than one chamber, bats will prefer roosting spaces of 3/4″ to 1″. In an ideal world, you could build a bat house out of 6 pieces of wood. As such, you should refrain from using treated wood (which is toxic to bats) when building a bat house.
